Frequency Response Evaluation of Acoustic Guitar Modifications
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates the effect of various modifications to an acoustic steel string guitar on lowfrequency dynamics and sound pressure level. Modifications include string tension, sound-hole area and depth, bridge pin mass, top plate mass, stiffness and damping. Frequency response measurements are provided for all modifications considered. A lumped parameter model is found to capture the changes in measured frequency response and sound pressure level remarkably well. The measurements and model results are found to be consistent with player and listener perceptions in most cases. Results from a parametric study identify a unique combination of physical parameter adjustments for broadband increase in sound level. In addition, a technique for obtaining low-frequency free-field sound pressure without the need for an anechoic chamber is successfully applied to the acoustic guitar. This technique uses near-field, time-selective impulse response sound pressure measurements to determine the low-frequency free-field sound pressure.

Recording the sound of musical instruments with FBGs: the photonic pickup.
Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have previously found many applications as strain and vibration sensors. Here we demonstrate that they may also be employed as pickups for musical instruments and, specifically, for acoustic guitars and solid-body electric guitars. By fixing the FBG to a vibrating part of the instrument's body, e.g., near the bridge of an acoustic guitar or on the headstock of a soli...

Each acoustic instrument is one of a kind. Its unique acoustic properties are transferred from the physical characteristics of its source materials and a handcrafted touch. In contrast, electronic and computer-based instruments lack this distinguishing trait. Though the technology support in music instruments offers great flexibility, it tends to foster predictable and generic results, particul...
متن کاملUsing Boundary Element-Based Near-field Acoustic Holography to Predict the Source Pressures and Sound Field of an Acoustic Guitar
(Near-field Acoustic Holography, Audio Production, Guitar) In recording studios, the placement of microphones to record an acoustic guitar is very much subjected to trial and error and audio engineer preference. In order to make more informed microphone placement decisions, Near-field Acoustic Holography is used to study the sound pressures of the guitar. This technique involves solving the int...
متن کاملMore acoustic sounding timbre from guitar pickups
Amplified guitars with pickups tend to sound ’dry’ and electric, whether the instrument is acoustic or electric. Vibration or pressure sensing pickups for acoustic guitars do not capture the body vibrations with fidelity and in the electric guitar with magnetic pickups there often is no resonating body at all. Especially with an acoustic guitar there is a need to reinforce the sound by retainin...
متن کاملMusical instrument recordings made with a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity: photonic guitar pickup.
A 1 cm long, low-finesse fiber-optic cavity was used as a transducer for the vibrations of the soundboard of an acoustic guitar and of a violin. The reflected light is detected and then amplified and recorded using conventional audio instrumentation. The fiber-optic pickup is found to have a high response range in both amplitude (up to 100 microm displacement) and audio frequency (DC to 20 kHz)...
